I had not seen my grandmother since 1979. It was now Dec. 1992. Jhaiji (the endearing way to refer to a grandmother in Hindi) decided she was going to be the one to make my very favorite gobi ka parathas, a north Indian flat bread stuffed with cauliflower. It's sort of like a thick pancake. It is an especially popular and healthy type of bread and part of my Punjabi heritage.

I couldn't say no, I knew it would be a savory meal. My stomach was so ready, I could taste the food via the aroma of spices, as they wafted through the cool air that simple afternoon in December of '92.
