COMMENTS:
"Kavita Bali captures the world with a definitive eye, stopping the flow of time and space through her lenses. She shares with us some transcendental moments, where the feminine body locates itself against a world that parades at times against a canvass of demands, and in other times, strolls in the lazy glow of memory."
Chinatown Community Arts Program, Roger T. Lee, (SF, CA July 2000). Comment made on this series while at the 'Seven Voices' exhibit.

These are some images I took during a trip to India in late 1992/early 1993. The images are of my grandmother in Uttar Pradesh. I present these photographs here as a way to honor her spirit.

I hope these images will remind us that strength and beauty come in many forms...not just what we see in Bollywood's stereotypical portrayals of women. We Americans, of South Asian descent, have the opportunity to create our own images of modern women, images which reflect the rich layers of complexity that make us who we are... uniquely individualistic, strong willed yet diplomatic, full of integrity and above all compassionate.

Enjoy this quiet visual journey into a reality that is quickly dissipating before our very eyes into the cauldron of frenzied pop culture. Here we can still see value and humanity, hopefully we shall never forget such basic truths.
