Dec: RISD's West Coast Holiday Arts & Crafts Sale. Alumni from Rhode Island School of Design stated to be "The Best Art School in the Nation" by US News & World Report, present their Annual West Coast Holiday Arts & Crafts Sale - The Best in the West.

COMMENTS: Many came by the Urban Peacock table to check out Kavita's photography & ink drawings and to listen to Vandana's new jazz/broadway CD 'With You'. The musical listening station, the art and festive atmosphere and the chocolate hershy kisses all helped to create a friendly warmth on a chilly SF afternoon for gift seekers. Check out some Photos from that day.

2001

March 2: 'Cultural Perspectives' Gallery Talk at the 'RISD on the Road' Exhibit Opening at the San Francisco Atrium. Kavita spoke on the impact her cultural heritage has had on her art work. She discussed her artistic journey: as an Indian girl who grew up in an American world and how she continuously unites the 2 cultures in her life through art.

COMMENTS: Kavita shared slides of her work and spoke about the concepts and motivations behind the creation of each of her pieces. The heart of the discussion revolved around her accordion bound book 'Passages' created in 1987. This piece depicts the simultaneous pathways of an individual who journeys through an eastern and western doorway via the double-page spreads representing the stages of life. Also discussed were her B&W photographs taken in India and her latest explorations of self identity realized through her ink drawings and digital paintings. For more information about the talk check out: Kavita's Press Release, RISD Press Release.

2000

Nov. 30 - Dec 9: Works/San Jose Gallery Silent Night Exhibition and Auction. The works of over 100 artists were auctioned off at the conclusion of the exhibition. Kavita donated an archival, museum quality print of her recently acclaimed photograph: 'My Heritage, My Heart, My Soul '. This image, of Kavita's grandmother's hand has been accumulating praise everywhere it is showcased. The universality of the image is striking a chord with people that extends to a common humanity within all of us.

COMMENTS: Kavita's piece was sold during the evenings energized bidding environment. Many who walked by the hand would bend down for closer examination of the detailed texture inherent in the image. With over 40 volunteers and nearly 200 works of art auctioned off, the evening consisted of a mixture of art patrons, artists and those just wandering into the evening's festivities.

2000

Dec 3: RISD's West Coast Holiday Arts & Crafts Sale. Alumni from Rhode Island School of Design present their Annual West Coast Holiday Arts & Crafts Sale - The Best in the West.

COMMENTS: Sunday's Show at Ft. Mason was a rewarding experience full of excitement and sharing. The greatest joy came from sharing stories that surrounded the capturing of time. It was a pleasure to meet new people and to hear how the images seemed to touch a universal chord within people. The morning was a bit slow, but later in the afternoon the crowds packed the space. Nearly 30 RISD artists displayed their original creations as holiday shoppers streamed in on a sunny decemeber afternoon.

The biggest hit of the day at the Urban Peacock table was the photograph taken of my grandmother's hand, titled 'My Heritage, My Heart, My Soul'. Strangers who were browsing would linger for a moment and soon share their own stories of grandparents/ family memories touching upon aging, travel, humanity and ultimately the simple wonders of creativity in general. The bowl of Hershey's kisses was a big hit with the younger ones. Overall, it was a beautiful and rewarding time. The help of friends made for an efficient and enjoyable event, ensuring we had all the sale items completely packaged and pristine. Some memorable moments of the day were captured by expressions of warmth and thanks on the faces of people who purchased the images. For those who attended, I will let you know of future events and hope you enjoy the gifts.
