Sept. 9 : 'Womens Work Series' presented by Footloose @ Venue 9 in San Francisco. Kavita was one of the featued artists at this event. 'Birth of a Butterfly' and 'Distant Souls' were screened before a full house, extending it's universal themes to a growing audience base. ftloose.org

March 8 :'Showcasing Women Creators of the Asian Diaspora' In honor of International Women's Day presented by Mango Mic at the PUSOD Space, Berkeley, CA. Kavita was one of the 3 featured artists. She shared her poetic films, 'To Serve One's Country', 'Birth of a Butterfly', 'Distant Souls'; her visual book 'Passages' and stories of growing up in the US during the 1970's.

Nov. 24: Dallas South Asian Film Festival, Everest Theater, Irving, Texas. 'Birth of a Butterfly ' and 'Distant Souls' (Texas premiere) were part of the Short Film Program, followed by a Q &A. The festival featured a dozen of today's emerging South Asian voices in film.Details (outside link)

   

Nov. 23: 'NAATA: Subcontinental Roots and Wires' presented by Tasveer, Oseao Studios, Seattle, WA. Showcased organization's favorite film pics of the year followed by a discussion and cultural entertainment. 'Birth of a Butterfly' was screened. Part of a fundraiser for Tasveer.

   

Nov. 11 - 19: University of Nebraska's Artist Diversity Residency Program, Lincoln, NE. Kavita was the Artist in Residence, lecturing and sharing her art, films, poetry ('Evenings Slumber ' and 'Still Life') and design experiences from the past 15 years as an Indian-American artist growing up in the US since 1971.

   

Nov. 14 - 'An Urban Peacock's Cultural Discovery' - World premiere public reading of Kavita's 6 page poem 'The Horseman has Come' (2000) , screening of 4 films and detailed presentation of her 1987 thesis book 'Passages' at UNL. K's press release. Daily Nebraskan article (outside link)

   

Nov. 4 : 'Viv and a Movie' Red Devil Lounge, SF, CA. Silkcreen and original ink drawings were displayed. 'Birth of a Butterfly' was screened.

   

Sept. 24 : 'South Asian Response' presented by Tasveer/ Third I Seattle. 911 Media ArtsCenter, Seattle, WA. 'To Serve One's Country' (Seattle premiere).

   

August 25: "Women on the Verge Articulating Identity" part of the Girls on Film (Women of Color) Series. ATA (Artist Television Access), SF. August 24:' Political Film Series' presented by Third I SF. 'To Serve One's Country' (SF premiere). This film was the opener for Purvee Christie's Fund raiser for her upcoming feature film 'Expecting Shanti'.

   

August 9 : North West Asian American Film Festival, Theater Off Jackson, Seattle, WA. Seattle Premiere of 'Birth of a Butterfly' with Q&A after the screenings.

   

July 15 : 'Viv and a Movie' Red Devil Lounge, SF, CA. 'Birth of a Butterfly' screened and '3 Generations of Independence' was displayed. "Viv and a Movie" is just started this summer, it is a film and art series showcasing local Bay area artists (visual & film, musical)

   

May 4 : 'Birth of a Butterfly' screened as part of "She Creates: A screening of short films by women filmmakers" Mills College, Oakland, CA. A fund raiser for Aparna Malladi 's feature film 'Mitsein'.

   

March 9: The Bay Area Forum for International Women's day presents "Women of the World: Different Paths to Freedom" Film Screenings and Conversations with Women in Film at the World Affairs Council. March 2 : 17th annual Empowering Women of Color Conference - Women of Color in the Media. UC Berkeley. Kavita led a workshop 'An Urban Peacock's Quiet Defiance: Creating Images of Modern Women who Positively Define their own Cultural Heritage' screening her film 'Birth of a Butterfly' as a springboard for discussion. 2001   September 27: "APAture 2001 " curated by Kearny Street Workshop. Kavita's Film 'Birth of a Buttterfly' was screened with the works of 9 other emerging Asian-American filmmakers before a packed audience at the SOMARTS gallery in San Francisco. Screening and Q&A.
    June 10: Film Screening. SF Premiere of 'Birth of a Butterfly' as part of "Third I" a series of films on South Asian identity presented by Network of Indian Professionals. Article. Screening & Q&A.
1998   September: Shakti: Roots of Vision, Performance night & group exhibit at Works/ San Jose Gallery, San Jose, CA. Performance Night with Kavita Bali, featured original poetry on the LA Riots, 5 short films & silkscreen art
1997   WorldFest Houston International Film Festival, Houston, TX. Short Film 'Namaste Papaji' was a finalist (top 10) in the Dramatic Original Screenplay category. The film was selected out of over 4,500 entries from 26 countries.
    April: New York University's First Run Film Festival, NY, NY. Short Film 'Namaste Papaji' world premiere
