Kavita is a mentor and community advocate helping people around the world discover creativity in their lives.

She is in the process of creating a virtual united nations unifying people through art and creativity.

This idea sprouted in 1989, became a bit more focused in 1994 and today is about to blossom into the first phase of this reality.

Her life's decisions have progressed in a way to realize this dream of creative and humanitarian unity.

2005  

Nov. 22 - Dec 3, 2005: '2005 Benefit Auction and Exhibition' presented by WORKS Gallery, San Jose. Over 200 regional artists supporting freedom of expression shared their art to help support our local, volunteer-run, nonprofit contemporary art and performance center. Kavita's 2004 painitng "External Fury: Environ... Mental... Smoke " was part of this exhibit. K's press

Nov. 23 - Dec. 4, 2004: '2004 Benefit Auction and Exhibition' presented by WORKS Gallery, San Jose. Nearly 190 of our region's most celebrated artists donated their works to help support our local, volunteer-run, nonprofit contemporary art and performance center. Kavita's painitng "Midnight Journey" was part of this exhibit. PR

   

October 9, 2004: 'AAWAA 15th Anniversary Celebration & Silent Auction' 7-9pm The Women's Building, Main Auditorium, 3543 18th Street, San Francisco, CA. Asian American women artists transform a wooden bowl, exploring their interpretations of the simple object, a universal object in Asian cultures. The bowls were generously donated by IKEA East Palo Alto.

July 12- September 24: 'Crossing Bridges' presented by CBS MarketWatch.com, San Francisco corporate headquarters. An Exhibition of current works by 19 members of the Asian American Women Artist's Assocition. On display: Angst into Dance, Blinding Waters, Digital Trash, Disco Under the Sea, Don't Call Me Desi/I am Tomorrow, Lotah, Marigold Fields, Summer (part of the 'Seasons of Life' series), and Bizerk.

   

June 30: 'Viv and a Movie' Red Devil Lounge, SF, CA. Kavita had almost a whole wall of her original paintings, including first time previews of her latest works. People's favorites included 'Digital Trash', 'Raging Rapids', 'External Fury', and 'Lotah'.

   

June 17 - August 14: 'AAWAA Group Exhibit' presented by d.p. Fong Galleries, San Jose. An Exhibition of current works by 19 members. On display: 'Winter Poppies' and 'Winter' (Part of the 'Seasons of Life' series)

   

May. 6 - June 5: 'Blue' presented by WORKS Gallery, San Jose. An Exhibition of current works members. Kavita's 'Digital Trash' ©2004, a piece where poetry and painting inspire each other.

2003  

Sept. 9 : 'Womens Work Series' presented by Footloose @ Venue 9 in San Francisco. Kavita was one of the featued artists at this event. 'Birth of a Butterfly' and 'Distant Souls' were screened before a full house, extending it's universal themes to a growing audience base. ftloose.org

   

July 2: Beyond Bollywood: Words and Vision. A Salon of poetry, film and contemporary thought. Presented by LOCUS 1640 Post, SF, CA. Film Screening followed by Q&A. June 16: 'Viv and a Movie' Red Devil Lounge, SF, CA. Kavita showcased her latest paintings 'Autumn', 'Summer', 'Summer II', 'Disco Under the Sea', 'Blinding Waters'. The place was packed with fellow Bay area artists, musicians and filmmakers. The band Viv was awesome as always. The painting that received the most smiles was 'Autumn', folks loved the blues and vibrant colors in this piece.

   

June 2 : 'Viv and a Movie' Red Devil Lounge, SF, CA. Original photography and ink drawings were on display / for sale at Viv's First year anniversary. The place was packed with fellow Bay area artists, musicians and filmmakers. People really responded to the grandmother series photographs :)

   

May 15, 16: Film Screening of 'To Serve One's Country' and 'Namaste Papaji' at APICC's United States of Asian America 2003 Festival. SomArts Gallery, SF, CA. Screening and Q&A. Details

   

May 15: 'Urban Peacock Tales: An Evening of Art, Poetry and Universal Journeys Through Time' at WORKS Gallery, San Jose, CA. World premiere event. Kavita shared her latest collection of poetry, new paintings and photographic installation explorations created during her April - May Artist Residency. WORKS Gallery

   

May 13: Poetry & Prose Reading at SomArts Gallery, SF, CA. Part of the AAWAA Exhibit 'Making Their Mark: Concepts, Visions and Narratives' by more than 30 Asian American Women Artists and Writers. Kavita read her 6 page poem 'The Horseman has Come'.

   

May 8 - June 5: 'Relish' Member Exhibition. Works/San Jose Gallery. Kavita's painting 'I am Tomorrow' is on display. (Details about this painting)

   

May 7 - May 11: 20th Annual Meeting for the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS), Conference in SF, CA. Kavita's photograph 'My Heritage, My Heart, My Soul ' was on display along with the art of other AAWAA members.

   

March 8 :'Showcasing Women Creators of the Asian Diaspora' In honor of International Women's Day presented by Mango Mic at the PUSOD Space, Berkeley, CA. Kavita was one of the 3 featured artists. She shared her poetic films, 'To Serve One's Country', 'Birth of a Butterfly', 'Distant Souls'; her visual book 'Passages' and stories of growing up in the US during the 1970's.

   

March 2 : 'South Asian Youth Conference - Finding Role Models' presented by (IACC) the Indo-American Cultural Center at UCLA's Tom Bradley International Center, Los Angeles, CA. Kavita was invited to be an opening speaker, representing the 30 something generation. The Conference was an opportunity for youths to connect with successful role models who are in non-traditional professions for the purpose of mentorship, dialogue and support. Kavita spoke primarily about her 15 year design career starting at RISD art school in the early 1980's, to graphic designer to corporate high tech UI Design Director and now the creative director of her own consulting business. Feb. 22: 'Loadshedding' at the Grand Lake Neighborhood Center, Oakland, CA. An evening of south asian spokenword, music and more. Kavita shared her poem "The Horseman has Come"(2000).

   

Feb. 8: 'Mango Mic' at the PUSOD Space, Berkeley, CA. Public space for area poets to explore their latest works. West Coast premiere reading of Kavita's 6 page poem "The Horseman has Come"(2000) and "Tales of the Sequoias" (2002). House packed to standing room only.

   

Jan. 24, 25: 'Triptych' Yugen Theater (Noh Space), SF, CA. World Premiere of Summi Kaipa's play. Kavita starred as Laxmi, in her theatrical debut. Both shows sold out. Photos & Details.

Dec. 7 : Works/San Jose Gallery Silent Night Exhibition and Auction. San Jose, CA. Exhibited original painting 'Letting Go'.

   

Nov. 24: Dallas South Asian Film Festival, Everest Theater, Irving, Texas. 'Birth of a Butterfly ' and 'Distant Souls' (Texas premiere) were part of the Short Film Program, followed by a Q &A. The festival featured a dozen of today's emerging South Asian voices in film.Details (outside link)

   

Nov. 23: 'NAATA: Subcontinental Roots and Wires' presented by Tasveer, Oseao Studios, Seattle, WA. Showcased organization's favorite film pics of the year followed by a discussion and cultural entertainment. 'Birth of a Butterfly' was screened. Part of a fundraiser for Tasveer.

   

Nov. 11 - 19: University of Nebraska's Artist Diversity Residency Program, Lincoln, NE. Kavita was the Artist in Residence, lecturing and sharing her art, films, poetry ('Evenings Slumber ' and 'Still Life') and design experiences from the past 15 years as an Indian-American artist growing up in the US since 1971.

   

Nov. 14 - 'An Urban Peacock's Cultural Discovery' - World premiere public reading of Kavita's 6 page poem 'The Horseman has Come' (2000) , screening of 4 films and detailed presentation of her 1987 thesis book 'Passages' at UNL. K's press release. Daily Nebraskan article (outside link)

   

Nov. 4 : 'Viv and a Movie' Red Devil Lounge, SF, CA. Silkcreen and original ink drawings were displayed. 'Birth of a Butterfly' was screened.

   

Oct. 24 : 'BAIDO organization's Fall Fund Raiser' held at ProArts Gallery in Oakland, CA. Kavita's latest paintings were on display at this event. 'Winter Poppies' and the modern Indian woman portrait 'I am Tomorrow' seemed to be people's favorite.

   

Sept. 24 : 'South Asian Response' presented by Tasveer/ Third I Seattle. 911 Media ArtsCenter, Seattle, WA. 'To Serve One's Country' (Seattle premiere).

   

August 25: "Women on the Verge Articulating Identity" part of the Girls on Film (Women of Color) Series. ATA (Artist Television Access), SF. August 24:' Political Film Series' presented by Third I SF. 'To Serve One's Country' (SF premiere). This film was the opener for Purvee Christie's Fund raiser for her upcoming feature film 'Expecting Shanti'.

   

August 9 : North West Asian American Film Festival, Theater Off Jackson, Seattle, WA. Seattle Premiere of 'Birth of a Butterfly' with Q&A after the screenings.

   

August 5 : 'Viv and a Movie' Red Devil Lounge, SF, CA. 'My Grandmother Series' of Photographs were displayed with the poem 'Evenings Slumber'

   

July 15 : 'Viv and a Movie' Red Devil Lounge, SF, CA. 'Birth of a Butterfly' screened and '3 Generations of Independence' was displayed. "Viv and a Movie" is just started this summer, it is a film and art series showcasing local Bay area artists (visual & film, musical)

   

May 4 : 'Birth of a Butterfly' screened as part of "She Creates: A screening of short films by women filmmakers" Mills College, Oakland, CA. A fund raiser for Aparna Malladi 's feature film 'Mitsein'.

   

April 29 : "Totally Locus: Explorations & Healing" part of the 'Sa-I-Gu' (4-29) event at LOCUS 1640 Post, SF, CA. Artists from around the US came together to share their spoken word art dealing with relationships between the Asian and African American communities remembering the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Kavita read her poem 'The Conscientious Reporter' as an opener for this energized evening of Spoken word and Hip Hop.

   

March 9: The Bay Area Forum for International Women's day presents "Women of the World: Different Paths to Freedom" Film Screenings and Conversations with Women in Film at the World Affairs Council. March 8 - April 6: 'Ag:25works - Group Exhibit. Works/San Jose Gallery. Kavita's digital painting 'Three Generations of Independence' on it's premier public showing. See Kavita & her art.

   

March 2 : 17th annual Empowering Women of Color Conference - Women of Color in the Media. UC Berkeley. Kavita led a workshop 'An Urban Peacock's Quiet Defiance: Creating Images of Modern Women who Positively Define their own Cultural Heritage' screening her film 'Birth of a Butterfly' as a springboard for discussion.     September 27: "APAture 2001 " curated by Kearny Street Workshop. Kavita's Film 'Birth of a Buttterfly' was screened with the works of 9 other emerging Asian-American filmmakers before a packed audience at the SOMARTS gallery in San Francisco. Screening and Q&A.

2000   December: Works/San Jose Gallery Silent Night Exhibition and Auction. San Jose, CA. Donation of the photograph "My Heritage, My Heart, My Soul' was sold to the highest bidder at the December event.

1997   WorldFest Houston International Film Festival, Houston, TX. Short Film 'Namaste Papaji' was a finalist (top 10) in the Dramatic Original Screenplay category. The film was selected out of over 4,500 entries from 26 countries.
    April: New York University's First Run Film Festival, NY, NY. Short Film 'Namaste Papaji' world premiere
1987   May: Asian Arts Festival at Brown University, Providence, RI. Featured watercolor, pen & ink illustrations
    May: Woods Gerry Gallery at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. Thesis Exhibition, featured original silkscreen accordion bound book depicting east/west journeys. This piece represents Kavita's beginning explorations of cultural heritage issues while growing up in the US.

Awards    
2003   April - May Artist Residency. WORKS/San Jose Gallery, a cutting edge contemporary arts gallery. Kavita has been working on a new painting series, exploring photographic installation concepts, compiling a manuscript of poetry and working on ideas for a comedy/ new play as she continues to work on her first feature film script.

1979   Spring Gold Key Award for Ink Drawing . Presented by the 52nd annual regional Scholastic Arts & Photography program representing the Twin Tiers school district. Contour drawing 'Stephanie' won in the ink drawing category for Horseheads Junior High School West, NY. Program was sponsored by the Robertson Center for the Arts & Sciences.
1979   Feb. 4 Designed menu cover (ink drawing) for the 13th Annual Dinner Dance for The International Club of Finger Lakes Region, NY
1975   Summer GE Children's Art Contest winner for middle school age group, created a drawing dealing with energy efficiency alternatives for GE Corporation, Elmira, NY

Kavita's film influences include Satyajit Ray, Jean Cocteau, Julie Dash, Sergi Eisenstein, D.W. Griffith, Fritz Lang, and her directing mentor in NY, Vojtech Jasny. She is also fond of the Amitabh Bachchan films she saw in the1970's and many of Hollywood's Golden era classics.

Kavita has studied Photogrpahy with Henry Horenstein as well as explored the wonders of a self-made pin-hole camera while at the Basel School of Design.

Kavita's photographic influences include: Dorothea Lange, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Stieglitz, Andre Kertesz and Eugene Atget.
