17th Annual Empowering Women of Color Conference presents Women of Color in the Media Saturday, March 2nd, registration 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

BERKELEY, California - The 17th Annual Empowering Women of Color Conference presents Women of Color in the Media featuring: Gina Prince-Bythewood, director and screenwriter of Love and Basketball; Mara Brock Akil, creator and co-executive producer of UPN's hit show Girlfriends; and Felicia D. Henderson, director and co-executive producer of the Showtime series, Soul Food. Saturday, March 2, 2002 (9am - 4pm) at the University of California, Berkeley, Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union. All are welcome to attend workshops and activities addressing the multi-faceted presence of women of color in media including film, television, music, theater, dance, writing, the internet, media activism/campaigns, and other forms of communication. EWOCC is presented in conjunction with the Women of Color Film Festival (March 1-3, 2002) at the Pacific Film Archive (UC Berkeley campus).

Workshop Session 1 (10:00am - 11:00am) AN URBAN PEACOCK'S QUIET DEFIANCE: Creating Images of Modern Women who Positively Define their own Cultural Heritage. (Room Location: Stephens Lounge) This workshop focuses on our personal perceptions of cultural identity. Kavita Bali will screen her film "Birth of a Butterfly" as a springboard for discussion to bring awareness about how our cultural heritage and traditions can be positively embraced in our modern lives.

Kavita Bali is a creative consultant/filmmaker serving the high tech and non-profit industries. Her company Urban Peacock specializes in complex user interface design navigational systems and conceptual media convergences. She has a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, has studied Film at NYU, and writes on issues of design, art and culture. Kavita moved from India to the US in 1971 at the age of six.
